Pacific Women in ICT (PICwICT) held its first virtual meetup in September. This meetup was initiated after a series of Pacific Women features by PICISOC where women in ICT were invited to share their stories.
What started off as an idea for a virtual wine catch up resulted in the creation of a mailing list to capture and update Women on ICT related matters in the region. The event was scheduled for a Tuesday night at 7pm Fiji time, 67 ladies had registered for the event with an average attendance of 33 women coming in and out at different times during the meeting.
The ladies from Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, Cook Islands and Fiji were each asked to give a brief 2 minute introduction followed by country updates on how COVID19 affected their work in the region and how they handled it. There were women connecting from work, some listening in from the lecture room in class, while others were connecting from home with the sound of kids playing or crying in the background, or coming on screen with baby at some point.
There were women from various sectors including: Government, NGO’s , Academics, Corporate social enterprises, as well as ICT professions and those specialising in cybersecurity, ICT policy, IT Analysts, ICT support etc..
Everyone welcomed the initiative as it highlighted the need for women in ICT to connect with each other and to learn from each other. It was requested that this be held regularly possibly monthly or fortnightly.
The next Pacific Women in ICT (PICwICT) virtual meetup is scheduled for 27th October, 7pm Fiji time with an introduction of Pacific Women in Internet Governance (IGF) and exploring ways to support the MAG.
